Paramount Pictures, Bad Robot has announced the acquisition of the rights to the adaptation of the Japanese cartoon “Your name”. The Studio will collaborate with a Japanese production company Toho, the production company of the original cartoon released in 2016. Toho will also act as the distributor of the film in Japan.
J. J. Abrams and Lindsey Weber will be the producers of the project, in cooperation with the producer of the original film – Gena Kawamurai. Screenwriter of the film announced the nominees for the award “Oscar” Eric Heisserer (“Arrival”).
General Director of the Toho Yoshishige Shimatani said: “it’s So great that we will cooperate with extraterestrial Hollywood team and create a full-length version of the cult movie “Your name”!”.
“Just like in the cartoon, it’s a dream,” said Gena of Kamakura. “Mr. Abrams and his team impress the audience with their works, as a screenwriter, Mr. Heisserer, I am sure, perfectly adapts this science fiction love story. During our meetings I have heard so many creative ideas that there is not the slightest doubt that the film will be great. I’m honored to work with this team over the Hollywood version of the film”.
Animated film “Your name” tells the story of a guy from Tokyo and a girl from the province who find that between them there is a strange and inexplicable connection. In the dream they switch bodies and live each other’s lives. The heroes decide to meet in reality, come what may.
The film became the highest grossing anime with a worldwide box-office in the amount of 355 million dollars. In Japan, the film has collected 25 billion yen ($303 million) and stayed on the first position on fees for a record 12 weeks.
