New review: Dislike 18.06.2017

One of the rare Sunny yellow days in St. Petersburg, on Nevsky when buzzing the crowd at the rivers and canals of endless sailing pleasure boats, wants to eat ice cream and drink soft drinks, I finally watched the new film by Andrey Zvyagintsev’s “Dislike”.

If could be a place more of a contrast with the mood on the street, a movie theater, where whether the air conditioner works on max or “Dislike” is beyond the boundaries of the screen.

The first cold shots showing snow covered trees in the picture, perhaps the most warm. Next we see the boy running away from school and wandering lonely through the woods to the house, under his feet the fallen leaves in the yard autumn. But at home the boy has a strict mother who shows the apartment to buyers, drinking wine and arguing with the father of the child. Parents are unable to agree on the place of residence of the son, and the dialogue sounds the most uncompromising variant — to take the boy to the orphanage. To trouble the child hears everything parents say, and the next morning runs away from home.

The story that unfolds on the screen, the clearest illustration of the film’s title. The only love here is the missing boy Alyosha. Although the division into good and bad characters is a sign of bad taste, all the characters Zvyagintsev’s monstrously disgusting.

The mother of Alyosha, Jack, very busy with their appearance and personal life, admits to his new lover that never loved anybody, except the mother in childhood, which in turn didn’t love her. “I am a beast”, says of himself he, and the viewer cannot not to agree with her, when returning in the night home, she, without looking at the child’s room, calmly lies in his bed.

Alesha’s dad, Boris, works in sales, is expecting a child with new women, doesn’t communicate with the boy not once in the whole movie and very afraid because of divorce, losing a job. Cowardly and indecisive, he completely lacks the ability to carry out the paternal function. He desperately takes part in the search for Alyosha, but not able to change anything. Spineless Boris is good at making babies, but unable to love them.

Grandma Alyosha’s mother, swearing swears that it disturbed in the search for the child, and takes things as fraud on the part of the daughter and her husband, screaming that will never rewrite the Dom to marry and to focus not notice the tragedy. She doesn’t like or daughter or grandson or anyone at all.

Lover Eugene Anton, though, and leads her to the restaurants, sleeping with her and even accompanied the searches, remains cold indifferent bystander who is absolutely still. His daughter in conversation on Skype refuses to come to Moscow to see her enough to see him through the screen. Zvyagintsev, almost joking, the topic of total Informatization, which is less alive, less love. Smartphones, endless selfies, instant messengers, even sitting at the same table, people often do not notice each other.

A way of existence and actions of law enforcement bodies in Russia, the institution of family and marriage, is so untenable that it goes into the category of a global catastrophe.

In his fifth film, Andrey Zvyagintsev speaks through the mouth of one of the characters: “it is Impossible to live in dislike” and shows the millions and millions of families living so, for example, one specifically taken. This is really a “social cinema”, showing the everyday life of people who for some reason were together, got married, had a child and were born themselves. Moving by inertia, obeying a momentary impulse, these people don’t know what love is.

The disappearance of Alesha — a literal illustration of the human reaction to a life of lovelessness. The child needs to feel loved, to assimilate the unconscious message of “you are”, if he hated, in the language of the unconscious, it sounds like “me”. And Alyosha disappearing physically ceases to be. His name is very loud the people involved in the search, but it can’t be heard, because it was never saturated with the energy of love.

The maternal instinct, though originally this unconditional maternal love, the film is missing completely, thereby dispelling the myth of human instincts at all. Yes, the woman able to give birth and not love, as well as any man. Although society condemned the failure of the parent is traditionally much more in this respect, the two sexes are equal.

These boys and girls very much, some of them already adult uncle or aunt, they live from day to day with a hole inside, just raise families, grow and multiply dislike how dangerous virus.

And I’m left with the disturbing music in the horror-based shooter cold until the end of the credits, because I do not want to run out in the warmth and coziness of a Sunny day, when there are so many dislike.
