New review: Fists in the pocket 01.08.2016

In the film “Fists in pockets” the blind mother, eager hands of their children to maintain a traditional home life and to hamper their freedom, acquiring the features of metaphors of the Motherland, blind, and helpless, I continue to believe in long-discredited ideals and not noticing that among the children of the brewing rebellion against her. Forced to care for her mother and mentally retarded younger brother (representing, probably, the Philistine consciousness, infantilization mass culture) two brothers are unable to leave home and start independent life.

Here the film outlines have almost Nietzschean parables about the burden of a public debt of each individual, who is forced to perform its functions the maintenance of the decrepit social body that devalued their value in the years of the Second World war, but still requiring the service to them.

One of the brothers represents the dream of an independent life, free from old-fashioned values, and the other nihilistic impulse of destruction of traditional ethics. First — the dreamer, the second practitioner, who will do everything to make this dream come true, knowing that he himself as a revolutionary has no future. For the liberation of the other he goes on a killing mother and mentally retarded younger brother — Belloccio shoots these scenes in the most General way, seeking to deprive them of their specificity and shock value, it’s just a metaphor for rebellion.

Hero leads blind mother to the abyss, so she took the fatal step — and the young combatants provoked society to commit incriminating acts, to tease, to draw out his latent fascism out by jumping into the abyss of authoritarianism, society will destroy itself, because the number of dissenters will increase in direct accordance with the level of repression.

The movie “Fists in the pockets or tape Bertolucci’s “Before the revolution” (both films shot in the mid-1960s) reflected the social situation, when the confrontation between the marginal individual and social body for the first time lost criminal focus — the confrontation was translated in the plane of ethics and aesthetics, only later in the decade acquired a political character.
