New review: Jack the Ripper returns 27.07.2017

In front of the police Department of Los Angeles set an impossible task: in the shortest possible time to catch a serial killer operating on the streets. Killer imitates the handwriting of Jack the Ripper and leaves virtually no trace. The efforts of the police is crowned with success: they quickly go on the trail of a serial killer and the investigation is considered closed — the monster, obviously, considering his “mission” accomplished, committed suicide. However, once again opened circumstances of the case naturally cause investigators to question their conclusions…

Jack the Ripper — the embodiment of pure evil infernal. In our days, when terrorist attacks were a sad reflection of today’s daily, and several thousand victims of armed clashes in the Third World countries will be merely a pretext for bickering during the regular evening debates, the serial killer will not get even in the national news. The cult of violence and thrust humanity to self-destruction seem to have reached its climax and surprise it is now unlikely anyone will be — this has long been the norm. But nearly 130 years ago things were different- unknown serial killer operating in Whitchapel and other surrounding areas of London, claimed the lives of five female prostitutes from the slums and forever went down in history, becoming one of the most prominent characters of the late 19th century. The figure and the image of the Ripper has long turned into a mass cultural phenomenon and heard about it for sure everyone, even those who are most distant from the world of crime and news reports. So bright his mark in history and let the identity of the murderer is not known so far: no name, no pictures — only one nickname, heard of it all. In his debut work of Rudy Harrington, despite the name, his image and the imitator is only assigned to the conditional role, and the results of the deeds of his hands given to the minor of the total duration time. The maniac then, regardless of their status, the person background is static and is only the initial spark to the General inflammatory action.

Tape Rudy Harrington at its core, the film-the Changeling: what began as a typical example of police about the search fanatic on the night streets of Los Angeles, the authors then dramatically change the vector of the narrative and shift the focus towards obsessive vendetta marathon in a few days. The film brilliantly underscores the style of neo-Noir: the main characters, balancing between life and death, slowly but surely getting closer to the truth, travelling through the night back streets of the city of Angels under the dreary howling of the saxophone, as if taking us into the disturbing realm of sticky, paranoid nightmare where there is no place sunlight. And on top of all this dashing between anxiety and the romance of the unique atmosphere of the American cinema of the 80s. highlights of the picture adds a script, clearly and openly playing with the audience — are all built on small details-tips, toss the viewer and constantly knocking that up, forcing it to wrestle with in resolving the main mystery. This is the beauty of the picture — story mosaic, steadily and methodically exposing their puzzles and all the time forcing us to doubt. Due to this, the story remains the confident intrigue, firmly drawing the attention, from the first to the last minute. And complements all this ambiguity of the characters James Spader — whose nebula and a dark past cause the viewer continually distrust. Let the illogicality and artificiality of some of the episodes do not spoil the General background — they can be counted on fingers, and slight naivety and gentle on the mind — cinema of the 80s that was a typical norm. The power of this film is intriguing in its unhurried charm, has long been irretrievably lost to modern Hollywood. Film Harrington moderately romantic, moderately anxious, moderately atmospheric and entangled. The debut is definitely a success.
