Quite a long time the name of Japanese Director Yasujiro OZU was known only within his native country. Some eminent critics believed that the films of yasujiro OZU is the property of Japan and unlikely to be understood outside of the island nation. It is even conceivable that they feared negative feedback on the paintings, which are so revered in Japan. But the tapes Yasujiro OZU was destined to cross the seas and oceans and to be accepted there as hot as the rays light us warm, taking its start in the land of the rising sun.
The standard of the Director’s art from Yasujiro OZU all consider the so-called “Noriko trilogy”: the drama “Late spring” (1949), “Time of ripening of wheat” (1951), and, indeed, “Tokyo story” (1953). All they tell about the collapse of the single cell of society, i.e. the family decays. No, it is not a film about divorce and other unpleasant, but often occur in society the moments, the pictures that talk about how difficult it is to part with those whom you love from the birth parents. The first two films directly talking about how the main character’s the one Noriko don’t want to leave his father’s house, devotedly loving her father, but “Tokyo story” is somewhat different from its predecessors.
In “Tokyo story” tells the story of that elderly couple as loving parents goes to a small journey to visit their children and some relatives. But the children have long since own care and they are somehow not really welcome. Parents try not to interfere with the normal way of life of their offspring, but they still decide to send the elderly to the resort, but they only wanted to spend time with children, whom have given so much love and warmth as he could. Only Noriko, the widow of their son who died in the war, heartily glad to visit the house the elderly.
And in all this we can see ourselves. And this begs the question: well, what the film in Japan, well, what he filmed was in 1953? “Tokyo story” is highly relevant and natural movie in their directness and simplicity shows the realities of our social order, the coincidence of manners and relationships. And this is indescribably sad… This is the magic from Yasujiro OZU: the smiles of the characters feel that same sadness, inner torment, pain and bitterness, that is all that much to talk about as if not accepted, such as it is not comme Il faut.
Once again brilliant acting by Yasujiro OZU. Setsuko Hara, who embodied the new image of Noriko (all films of the trilogy the main character of the same name, but the stories differ from each other and talk about different families), poignant in its emotions, pure and noble, and when in one scene she’s crying, it kinda breaks my heart, she so badly about yourself comments, but nobody holds that against her, because to be angry at this wonderful woman is simply not for that… After the death of Yasujiro OZU actress Setsuko Hara ceased to be until the end of days led a reclusive lifestyle. That’s what the creative Duo… Tisu Rue also starred in all the tapes of the trilogy, but this time took on the image of the father-in-law Noriko, not the father. In this part, he acted more as a fan of sake, although the actor did not consume alcoholic drinks in contrast to a big fan of sake Yasujiro OZU. Ryu plays perfectly, but it’s better to watch and listen than to read this description. And all the others too cause only bow to and respect.
“Noriko trilogy”, and to this day remains unknown to many, that is easily explained by the “age” of the trilogy and the producer country, and the mainstream is now much more in fashion than a social drama. But the big fans of cinema in General, I would advise to check all three feeds, in order to plunge into the magical world of Japanese cinema, which rightfully should be famous not only by the name of Akira Kurosawa, and Yasujiro OZU.
